I am forwarding this notification of the passing of Paul Phalen, sent to me by Marta Gillen, Sr. Executive Assistant for the DVC President. Paul was a positive presence on the DVC campus, supportive of his colleagues, generous to his students and a wonderful representative of the DVC community. A special man who will be missed.

Dear DVC Community
We are saddened to report that Paul Phalen, former communication studies faculty, passed away peacefully on August 5, 2025, surrounded by family. The following is from his family:
Paul was hired at Diablo Valley College in 1970 as a Speech instructor. He loved being a DVC, full time, faculty member for 37 years. He appreciated the mentorship he received from senior faculty and became best friends with many of his speech and drama colleagues. He was so proud of the work he did, helping students find confidence in public speaking and in life. He coached the Speech and Debate team for nearly 20 years, winning national awards and establishing a program that is still thriving today. He attended many DVC drama productions, music performances and Viking’s athletic games. Paul also coordinated community events to build stronger connections with people across the college. After retiring in 2008, Paul taught part-time for 8 more years, getting involved with the DVC retirees and was always willing to share a story about the “good old days” of Diablo Valley College. He truly loved DVC, the faculty and staff, his students, and the work he did. He considered DVC his second home and one of his favorite places on earth.
