It is with sadness that we share the passing of colleague James P. (Jim) Walker. Jim was an adjunct Geology instructor, and passed away unexpectedly at his home on Tuesday, September 9, 2025. Additional details are provided by his family:

Jim was a passionate geologist and paleontologist whose career spanned more than two decades. He earned his B.S. in Geology from California State University, Hayward in 1996, followed by an M.S. in Geology from San Jose State University in 2004. Jim began his career with the U.S. Geological Survey, where he contributed to projects in hydrology, geochemistry, and paleontology. He later worked in private industry and eventually became an independent contractor, providing paleontological monitoring and fossil recovery services for major infrastructure projects throughout California.

A recognized expert on the Miocene stratigraphy of Contra Costa County, Jim’s professional work was widely respected, and his discoveries were even featured in the East Bay Times for uncovering a remarkable fossil treasure trove in Silicon Valley. His strong collaborations with local museums and research institutions left a lasting mark on the scientific community.

At Diablo Valley College, Jim was a valued adjunct professor, sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm for geology with countless students. His approachable teaching style and deep expertise inspired those who had the privilege of learning from him.

Jim is survived by his daughter, Sasha Walker. He will be remembered not only for his professional achievements but also for his warmth, generosity, and the care he brought to his teaching and mentorship.

Details about memorial arrangements are being arranged. We invite the campus community to remember Jim for his dedication to both his profession and his students.
